Friends strengthen us and provide a shield against the hardships life brings.
When faced with life’s challenges, problems, disappointments, setbacks and tragedies people naturally look for ways to cope. Common coping mechanisms such as pharmaceuticals, substance abuse and retreat to isolation and safety can aggravate the problem, though a person is simply looking for a shield from the hurt. On the other hand, friendship can be that shield in a healthy way. But successful friendships need consistent nurture and attention in order to be the effective shield during hard times.
