Overview, Sunrise Mountain, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Nevada
Adventure may occur on April 17, 2021
Sunrise Mountain, like its larger, better known neighbor immediately to the South, Frenchman Mountain, is not technically within the border of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. However, I’m including it in the Lake Mead section because, like Frenchman Mountain, it serves as a gateway to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and offers a grand view of the Lake Mead region stretching out below it immediately to the West.
Trailhead Directions, Sunrise Mountain, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Nevada
The trailhead for Sunrise Mountain is the same trailhead parking area as the trailhead for Lava Butte. It’s marked with a highway sign on Lake Mead Blvd indicating “Sunrise Mountain”. From the parking area you cross Lake Mead Blvd. and head North on a trail toward Sunrise Mountain. On the other hand, if you were heading for Lava Butte you’re go South on an unpaved road toward the butte.
Alternately, you could find a more direct approach from the Frenchman Mountain trailhead higher up on Lake Mead Blvd. You might even use one of the unmarked pull-outs on the North side of Lake Mead Blvd. (however, I would not feel at ease leaving my car in that area).
In my thinking, the best, most interesting approach to Sunrise Mountain is the one I first described.
