Overview | Badwater to Mahogany Flat | Death Valley National Park, California

This adventure to occur during an upcoming Winter.

The goal is to see how close I can get to Mahogany Flat Campground from Badwater, then return during a short Winter day. I may only get to the Westside Road and Hanaupah Canyon Road. I may have time to ascend a portion of Colville Ridge toward Mahogany Flat. We’ll see!

Total Mileage and Elevation Gain

I predict the total mileage from Badwater to Mahogany Flat and back will be 30 miles RT. The elevation gain from Badwater to Mahogany Flat Campground is from approximately 282 feet below sea level at Badwater to 8133 feet at Mahogany Flat Campground for a total elevation gain of 8,212 feet.ย 

Best Time of Year for This Adventure

The best time of year for this adventure is mid-March to mid-April when the temperature is not too horribly hot on the floor of Death Valley and there is minimal snow on Colville Ridge near Mahogany Flat Campground.ย 

Trailhead Directions | Badwater to Mahogany Flat | Death Valley National Park, California

From Las Vegas take Hwy 95 North to Beatty, Nevada. At Beatty Nevada take Hwy 394 (Daylight Pass Road) toward Death Valley National Park. About 10 miles after summiting Daylight Pass, take the left split toward Furnace Creek Ranch. Continue to the โ€œTโ€ intersection with Hwy 190 and take a left. Pass Furnace Creek Ranch and in a couple miles at The Oasis in Death Valley turn right onto Badwater Road. The start point is a wide spot on Badwater Road about 1/4 mile South of Badwater.ย
