Fascinating Distinct Remote Landmark
Every time I’ve ascended high points around Lovell Canyon (Rainbow Mountains Upper Crest Ridgeline, Wilson Ridgeline, Landmark Bluff) my eyes have been drawn to the distinctive form of this remote, little-known ridgeline. What would it be like to traverse the ridgeline? Is it even possible? What would the surrounding wilderness look like from its unique, wild and rugged vantage point? Might one stumble upon hidden historical, archeological or geological discoveries?
About the Nopah Range and Wilderness
The Nopah Range, a long ridgeline formation in California is situated West of the Rainbow Mountains and Lovell Canyon. It’s much closer to Death Valley, just to the East, and is part of The 106,623 acre Nopah Range Wilderness. The lowest elevation in this wilderness is 1,800ft where there are badlands, alluvial fans and desert washes populated by creosote, cacti, yucca, tortoises, wild burros and horses. The highest elevation, 6,394ft Nopah Point, is just 9 feet higher than nearby Nopah Peak with an elevation of 6,385ft. In these higher elevations you’re likely to see desert bighorn sheep, golden eagles and prairie falcons.
Open to the Public
The Nopah Range Wilderness is on BLM land, and there are no permits required to visit, just an intention to respect this pristine wilderness area and leave it as you found it.

From Las Vegas, take Hwy 160 toward Pahrump. Before reaching Pahrump, turn left onto the well-marked Tecopa Road. Tecopa Road becomes The Old Spanish Highway as it passes through the Southern end of the Nopah Range where you will find the route starting point (see the map). I do not yet know the quality of the road, but understand it is paved with some unpaved but well-graded stretches.
