Overview | Gap Peak “South of South Peak” | Rainbow Mountain Wilderness, Nevada
About the Name of Gap Peak
You’d naturally expect “South Peak” at the Southern end of the North-South line of Rainbow Mountain peaks to be the Southernmost peak in the Rainbow Mountains. After all, its official name is South Peak.
However, when I first ascended the upper end of Hollow Rock Peak‘s ridgeline and looked to the South, there was another, unexpected peak to the South of South Peak’s long ridgeline. Not knowing the name of this unexpected peak, I referred to it as “South of South Peak” just for quick reference. Later I discovered it had the name: Gap Peak as referenced on CalTopo. Yet another reference name is Ibolya Ridge, elevation 5,826ft, as referenced on Peakery.com. Here I’ll refer to this formation as Gap Peak.
One of my climbing partners, Jean Luc Montagnier, has explored the summit of Gap Peak and reports that its large, flat summit is an incredible cactus garden. This is due to its perfect orientation to the sunlight. I’m looking forward to standing on Gap Peak and observing this wonder!

Directions to the Start Point | Gap Peak “South of South Peak” | Rainbow Mountain Wilderness, Nevada
Take I-215 to the Charleston Blvd. Exit in Summerlin, then head upward toward Red Rock Canyon. Pass Red Rock Canyon, continuing on Hwy 159. Pass the town of Blue Diamond, then turn right onto Hwy 160 toward Pahrump. Hwy 160 will ascend upward to a high point just before the town of Mountain Springs. Around that high point park at the Mountain Springs Trailhead on your right. The trailhead has no marking and is a hard right turn off Hwy 160 onto an unpaved road and into an area that looks like an unimproved campground with scattered areas to park. If you are the first to arrive in the morning and the parking area is empty, it’s not obvious that you are at a trailhead.
