Narrative Guide | Terrace Canyon | Rainbow Mountain Wilderness, Nevada
From the Pine Creek Canyon Trailhead head up the Pine Creek Canyon Trail toward Mescalito Pyramid Peak, the distinctive sharp peak that divides Pine Creek Canyon. Take the left (South) canyon split (left of Mescalito Pyramid Peak). Continue upward in that split taking another left split to reach the beautiful Terrace Canyon.
There are a few class 3 rock scrambles along the way. You’ll need to navigate brush, boulders and Pine Creek, if it is flowing (Spring season). The creek is easier to navigate in the Summer as it is dry, but temperatures can reach an uncomfortable 100 – 115 degrees on a mid Summer day. And, Terrace Canyon is most beautiful when water is cascading down the terraces in the Spring. During this time of year the pools are inhabited by small, but very loud Baja California Chorus Frogs. They are very territorial and just may stare you down! Late April to early May may be the ideal time to visit Terrace Canyon.
Start early and allow yourself an entire day so that you have time to enjoy the terraces, gardens and pools of Terrace Canyon, then return to the Pine Creek Canyon Trailhead before dark.
