Overview | Devilโ€™s Slide | La Madre Mountains Wilderness, Nevada

Adventure to occur Fall or Spring soon!

Devil’s Slide is that massive limestone slab on the North side of La Madre Mountain. It’s visible from miles away, as far as the summit of Mummy Mountain and Harris Mountain in the Mt. Charleston Wilderness. The limestone slab was once an ancient 400M+ year-old sea bed, later elevated by tectonic forces to a near vertical angle. It’s a true natural wonder. This adventure will encounter Devil’s Slide up close and personal!

I initially heard this feature called, “The La Madre Mountain Scar”. From a distance it appears to be a snow field, even during the hottest Summer days. I guess you could call it a scar on the mountain. Then, one day, while I was hiking up Harris Springs Road, a man in a white pickup stopped to talk. He was a old timer to the area far outdating the rest of us newbies. He said the locals referred to The Scar as The Devil’s Slide. I instantly fell in love with that descriptive name, and so began referring to The Scar as The Devil’s Slide! Looking down the Devil’s Slide from its summit, the mere thought of sliding down that 1,000ft near vertical limestone slab feels like an invitation from the Devil!

Keeping to the theme, I refer to the ridgeline to the left (East) of Devil’s Slide, leading up to the summit of La Madre Mountain as The Devil’s Ladder.ย
