Boosting the Miracle of Microcirculation
Dr. Denise Tropea
Diplomate, American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery
Board Certified Foot Surgeon, Wound Care Specialist
What’s At the Root of Poor Health?
- Cellular debris
- Fluid imbalance between the blood and tissue
- Weak immune system, susceptibility to disease
- Malnourished cells
- Poor thermoregulation
- Poor cellular oxygen exchange resulting in cellular build-up of metabolic waste, toxins and carbon dioxide
- Damage to cells due to free radicals (toxins)
Manifestation of These Issues…
People may not recognize the state of poor health pictured in the last slides.
People don’t normally think of what’s happening on a cellular level in their bodies.
However, the results are disease states that have become common household terms:
- Diabetes
- Blindness
- Tissue Death (gangrene)
- High Blood Pressure
- Kidney Disease
- Kidney Failure
- Brain Diseases
The Culprit: Microvascular Dysfunction
What do we mean by “microvascular”?
Vascular: “Vessels, conduits”
Micro Vascular: Microscopic conduits.
What is Microcirculation?
Circulation of blood in the smallest of blood vessels.
- Present in organs and tissues
- Microvessels are called arterioles, capillaries and venules
- Arterioles carry oxygen and blood to the capillaries , and blood flows out of venules into veins
How Does Microcirculation Work?
- The vessels of the microcirculation are lined by endothelium. These are flat cells that regulate the movement of water and dissolved materials between the blood and the tissues.
- Pericytes are surrounded by the endothelial cells and are made up of smooth muscle.
- When vessels lose pericytes (die off), they become hyperdilated and hemorraghic leads to conditions such as swelling and retinal damage to the eyes.
The Miracle of Microcirculation
- Delivery of Oxygen and Nutrients
- Removal of Carbon Dioxide
- Blood Flow Regulation
How Does Our Immune System Work?
The Lymphatic System is our Drainage System
- Considered part of the circulatory system
- Collects fluids and proteins that has escaped from cells and returns it back to the blood
- Responsible for removing cellular debris
- Maintains balance of fluid between the blood and tissue
- Key player with the immune system and helps avoid infections
Capillaries and the Miracle of Microcirculation
What are capillaries?
- Fine branching of blood vessels between the arterioles and venules
- Comprise 75 % of the whole circulatory system
- Adult human has approximately 100,000 miles of capillaries
- Supply blood to the tissues which carry food and oxygen to the cells
- Form a network for the exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide and metabolic waste products
What is Anastomosis?
- Connection or opening between 2 entities such as blood vessels or intestines
- Circulation that is established between an artery and vein that is supplying nutrients or taking away toxins
- Shunt vessel that is under influence of the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight mechanism)
- Artery to artery connection seen in palmar (hand) and plantar (foot) arch.
What is Superficial A-V Anastomosis?
Direct connections between small arteries and veins – no capillaries
- Plays a role in thermoregulation
- Transport heat from body core
- Found in abundance in nail beds of the fingers and toes and palms and soles of feet.
Oxidative Stress and Microvascular Disease
- Damage to cells due to free radicals (toxins)
- Body needs steady supply of antioxidants to combat toxins
- Optimal Microcirculation continually supplies our 500 trillion cells with oxygen, water and nutrients
Can We Increase Microcirculation?
Let’s Turn Up the HEAT!
- Vessels dilate and more oxygen is being delivered to tissues
- Viscosity (blood thickness) becomes thinner and flow is improved
- Inflammation is reduced due to more effective detoxification at the microvasculature level.
- Enzymatic and hormonal processes are optimized such as chemicals to relax the vessels and decrease blood pressure.
Achieving Our Optimal Health
- Starts from the inside out
- Utilizing technology such as the AVACEN to assist our bodies to help “heal thy self” and become a healthy self
